UCD 1 Derry City 1:UCD stretched their unbeaten record to 10 matches with their fifth draw in a row last night at Belfield Park. For caretaker Derry player-manager Peter Hutton, in his first match in charge since taking over from Pat Fenlon, it was a satisfactory start.

Derry threatened early on when a long-range effort by Eddie McCallion took a deflection off defender Alan McNally, the ball gratefully grabbed by goalkeeper Matt Gregg.

The visitors grabbed the lead on 14 minutes when Kevin McHugh shot to the corner of the net from 25 yards.

UCD went close when Conor Sammon headed just over the top.

Derry should have stretched their lead on 18 minutes when Peter Hines created the opening for Gareth McGlynn to power through the UCD defence only to shoot wide.

Derry goalkeeper Pat Jennings did well to hold a close-range effort from Paul Byrne. Jennings came to the rescue again on 37 minutes when he pushed over a long-range effort from Conan Byrne. There was little he could do about the UCD equaliser in first-half added time when McNally scored from close range.

On 67 minutes McHugh was unlucky not to score a second. Accepting a pass from Barry Molloy, he stepped past two defenders to fire in a rocket of a shot from 22 yards.
