Ferguson will stay: Charlton

Bobby Charlton believes that Alex Ferguson will remain at Manchester United once his contract as manager runs out next year.

Ferguson stunned the footballing world last week when he announced he would be leaving Old Trafford for good at the end of next season. The 59-year-old Scot said talks about a future role for him had broken down and he was now set to walk away from the club.

However, Charlton, a director and ambassador for the club, believes Ferguson will reconsider - and is hoping to use the "special relationship" he has with the United boss to persuade him to stay.

"We want Alex to stay and we shall do the best we possibly can to find the right thing for him to do," said Charlton. "The problem will be solved, don't worry. Alex's options are open, but he will think very carefully before leaving Manchester United - he won't do that on a whim. I don't think he can - or will - walk away."

Charlton claimed that the club were still far from knowing who Ferguson's successor would be. "Alex is our manager until next year and there hasn't been a lot of thought about who is going to take over."
