BOXING: Neilstown's light-heavyweight Kenneth Egan made short work of German Robert Woge in the last 16 of the European Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria yesterday.

Egan stopped the German on the 20-point rule in round two. After forcing a standing count at the end of round one it was one way traffic and Egan was an impressive victor by 33 to 13. He now faces a last-eight fight against Mamadou Diambang of France tomorrow.

Featherweight Eric Donovan, of St Michael's Athy, came up against local favourite Alexey Shaidoulin of Bulgaria in front of a loud and partisan crowd. Shaidoulin, originally from Russia and five years older than the 21-year-old from Kildare, is the current world silver medallist. He scored freely from the first bell with Donovan struggling to convince the judges his shots were clean. The Bulgarian closed it out 29-9 in the third.
