In a bout described by the ringside announcer as the best ever at junior level in the National Championships, Gavin Brown beat Francis Maughan on a countback score of 191 to 190 after the match was scored at 55-55 each.

It was rip-roaring bantamweight contest with both boxers giving it everything in their five two-minute rounds. With one round to go, Brown from Crumlin was trailing Francis Maughan from CIE by two points at 44-46. But with a wonderful effort in the final round, Brown, who won a gold medal in the Gaelic Youth championships earlier this year, managed to draw level with Maughan and then won on the countback.
