BOXING:Amy Broadhurst was crowned European Junior featherweight champion following a thrilling win over Svetlana Khilchenko of Russia in Poland yesterday.

Dundalk southpaw Broadhurst, whose brothers Stephen and Paul have won bronze in European Youth and Schoolboy competition, claimed a 16-15 win in Wladyslawowo.

Her victory saw the Dealgan BC woman become the only Irish female boxer after Katie Taylor to win gold in European competition.

Broadhurst and Khilchenko shared the first round 5-5, but the Russian edged 9-8 ahead after the second.

“It was a fantastic victory and performance. The win is another great boost for women’s boxing in Ireland,” said IABA director of boxing Dominic O’Rourke.
