Who is Liam Byrne and what is next for the Kinahan cartel?

Byrne's arrest will come as a significant blow to the Kinahan organised crime group

Listen | 17:36

Dubliner Liam Byrne, who allegedly ran the Kinahan cartel’s operations in the Republic, was arrested in Spain at the weekend. He is expected to be extradited to Britain to face firearms charges after his arrest in Mallorca. His detention is seen as one of the most significant moves against Kinahan cartel associates since the Kinahan-Hutch feud began eight years ago.

Byrne (42) had been living in Dubai for some time since first fleeing from Dublin to the UK after the Criminal Assets Bureau closed in on his significant crime-funded assets. His mistake was to travel from extradition averse Dubai to Spain for a holiday.

Conor Lally, Irish Times crime and security editor, explains what his arrest means – for him and the Kinahan crime organisation. Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by Suzanne Brennan and John Casey.
