Sir, - Voluntary Service International (VSI), is now taking applications for its 1997 programme of voluntary work exchanges to many countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America. The short term exchange programme enables Irish people to gain an insight and understanding of developing countries by participating in voluntary work projects organised by local organisations and communities.

Irish people taking part in the two month programme work alongside local volunteers in a wide variety of manual work projects, e.g. building schools or health clinics, planting trees to stop soil erosion and other environmental and conservation work. Participants can also visit development projects and other voluntary organisations, as well as visiting places of cultural and touristic interest. VSI organise a comprehensive preparation programmes for participants before departure.
