Sir, – I have noticed a tendency in your reporting of court cases, to helpfully tell us how many men and women comprised the jury in a trial.

But you don’t tell us the ethnic make-up of the jury, nor their age profile, their education levels, how many members wear glasses, or whether any of them had cornflakes for breakfast, so clearly their gender is important in some way.

I am at a bit of a loss as to how one should interpret this information, and what significance should attach to it?

If I ever find myself up in front of a judge, should I hope for a majority-female jury, or would a resolutely male-dominated one be to my advantage? And under which regime would justice best be served? – Yours, etc,

DARIUS BARTLETT,
