Madam, - Vincent Holmes (September 30th) is correct regarding attitudes to alcohol in the US. About 20 years ago, a colleague and I were enjoying a drink in a Miami bar. A group of young people arrived but were refused service. I asked the bartenderette why they were refused and she told me that none of the group could satisfy her that they were over 18. She added that, had she served them and had the police arrived and established that any of the group was below the age limit, the bar owner would have been fined $10,000 and she $1,000.
Perhaps this optional solution to the problem is too complex for us Irish?
