Sir, – Fintan O’Toole’s recent article on Donald Trump’s family separation policy at the southern border makes for sobering reading (“Trump’s test-marketing of barbarism entering new phase”, Analysis, April 13th). Offering migrant parents the so-called “binary choice” of either volunteering to have their children indefinitely confiscated, or choosing to have their children accompany them to prison at the expense of signing away their legal rights, is unspeakably cruel.
O’Toole notes, “It is to be the signature policy of the Trump administration. The base has now been blooded and it likes the taste.”
All who support this hateful policy should hang their heads in shame. Would that a similar binary choice could be put to the Trump base: impeach your president or vote him out of office in 2020. – Yours, etc,
