Sir, - Much as John Waters might wish that "McAleese's win means Dublin-4ism is old hat" (Opinion, November 4th), I believe that such an analysis has more to do with optimism on his part than fact.
The truth is that the liberal agenda has been all but delivered and I expect that many liberals would have had little difficulty in voting for Mrs McAleese, because she is intelligent and articulate, looks well and would represent this country admirably. But, most important of all, she will be, as President, powerless.
However, if such a candidate were presented for election to Dail Eireann and stated publicly that she/he was against contraception and divorce, I expect the votes received by such a candidate in any constituency would convince even the most diehard that liberalism is alive and well and thriving well beyond the confines of Dublin 4. - Yours, etc.,
Richmond Court, Dublin 6.
