Madam, - Barry Purcell hits the nail on the head when he says (October 24th) that Irish has become irrelevant to young people. This, in my opinion, is due to the way it is taught.
I recently met a group of Leaving Certificate students learning, off by heart, in Irish, paragraphs about the history of the Irish language. The same group freely admitted that they couldn't use Irish language to order a pizza with no onions but extra salami. If you can't communicate in the language, then what is the point? - Yours, etc.,
