Madam, - I disagree with Dr D.P. McCardle's assertion (May 24th) that Ireland overspends on scientific research. Every survey would seem to contradict this. But we clearly need to fund it more wisely.

Scientific research is a vital part of our educational, social and cultural heritage and needs serious study in all aspects. We need good and adequately funded projects. We need a nucleus of young science graduates who are well trained in research techniques and who are taught to read the scientific literature so that they do not repeat work that has been done before. They need excellence in direction.

We also need to reverse the idea that industry-oriented projects are paramount. They are often short-term, profit-motivated and of limited application. I believe the policy of giving grants for such focused, strategic work is done in the mistaken belief that industry will return in kind by funding longer-term, non-strategic work.

However, industry's response to crucial scientific needs has frequently been disappointing. - Yours, etc.,
