Sir, The performance given by the Minister for Social Welfare on RTE's "This Week" programme (September 15th) was deplorable by any standards. It seems that he is at last going to undertake a major campaign against social welfare abusers. If so why is this only happening at this moment in time? Mr De Rossa was evasive and unconvincing when queried about the amount of money involved. It could be anywhere between £100 and £350 million, he believed. Perhaps the plethora of advisers and personal assistants at his command are hindering, not helping, him in his task of recovery.
Anyway, as someone said, one can buy a lot of Mercs for £350 million. The Minister should be aware that if he does not produce results quickly, his own will surely be repossessed by an angry electorate when the day of reckoning comes next year. Yours, etc., Annaville Park, Dundrum Road, Dublin 11
