Madam, - Is it fanciful to suggest that if Richard Dawkins had enrolled as a student of St Augustine the latter would have been delighted with the perspicacity of his student.

Dawkins considers the concept of a god whose existence we can prove. In the absence of any convincing proof he rejects the concept.

But, as St Augustine taught, that which can be encompassed by the human mind, whatever else it might be, is not the God of revelation. Thus, the god that Dawkins does not believe in does not exist.

Perhaps St Augustine would have encouraged his student with the reassurance later articulated by Pascal: "Take comfort; you would not be seeking me if you had not already found me". - Yours, etc,
