Madam, - To anyone who has observed Mary Robinson's work for civil and human rights over decades, the suggestion that she is anti-Semitic is plain nonsense (The Irish Times, April 15th).

Mrs Robinson is also alleged to have criticised the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land. Whether she did or not, that would be the position of many Jews around the world, Israel included. Indeed, the quality Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz (which, incidentally, may be read in English at www.haaretzdaily.com) abhors the policies of Ariel Sharon and strongly urges a total abandonment of the occupation. Of course, by the definition of the Emory University fanatics, Israel's best newspaper would thus also have to be condemned as anti-Semitic.

The mind boggles. Or, as an American might say, "Hallo?" - Yours, etc.,
