Madam, - It is simply farcical that AIB, the acknowledged guilty party in the latest in a long list of scams, is allowed to act as judge and jury in its own case.

IFSRA, the so-called financial regulator, is obviously following the long and ineffective tradition of its predecessor, the Central Bank, in having only one priority - the general stability of the banking system.

This is a policy of the utmost stupidity because it assumes or hopes that institutions such as AIB will voluntarily give up their scam industry which has been so successful in ripping off customers and the State over many years.

It seems that until the Government adopts and enforces laws that are the norm in other countries, Irish consumers will continue to rely on whistleblowers as the only effective financial regulatory authority. - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - How appropriate it would be, since no penalty is to be levied on AIB for the scandalous treatment of its customers over many years, that it might seek to rehabilitate its image through a meaningful and massive donation towards the plight of those emigrants who, in earlier times, kept this country - and its banks - afloat with remittances.

Scandalised, we have the temerity to nominate Ardal O'Hanlon's Aisling Project as a worthy beneficiary. - Yours, etc.,
