Sir, - For some considerable time now Iarnrod Eireann has been engaged in an extensive and, I am sure, expensive advertising campaign using the mellifluous tones of Dick Warner to inform us about "On Track 2000" which will involve an expenditure of £1 billion on upgrading the service.
That such an upgrading is essential is beyond doubt. What I am unable to understand is why it is necessary to engage in a costly advertising campaign to tell us about it. Surely the long-suffering travelling public will become aware of it as it happens.
To my mind it would have been far more appropriate to spend the money being wasted on this pointless exercise in an effort to clean up the DART stations and remove the litter which is strewn along the tracks. It might also have been possible to replace the many vandalised station identification signs and the signs warning people against trespass which, incredibly, have the word "iarnrod" spelt incorrectly. - Yours, etc., M. D. Kennedy (Mr)
Glenageary, Co Dublin.
