NTL'S CABLE TV SERVICE

GRAINNE FARREN,

GRAINNE FARREN,

Sir, - I wish to add my voice in support of those who object to NTL's recent changes, especially the removal of TV5.

This is a great loss to all French speakers in Ireland. I have already written to NTL to protest.

On the same page as the last three letters on this subject (June 21st), a letter from the head of modern languages at the Linguistics Institute of Ireland emphasised the need for a national policy on languages. A foreign-language TV station helps students and others to improve their command of the language in an enjoyable and entertaining way.

For French nationals, and all Irish people who have connections with France, TV5 was a way of keeping in touch. Its world news coverage was excellent and its programmes interesting.

I appeal to all concerned to protest to NTL about its removal. - Yours, etc.,
