Sir, – The coverage of the US presidential election by most of the Irish media outlets is so partisan as to make their claims to be fair and balanced in their reporting sound rather hollow.
This is a serious issue, regardless of one’s party loyalty. The media’s involvement and influence in the modern democratic process is of crucial importance.
Ultimately fair and balanced reporting is essential to guarantee the authenticity of that process.

Sir, – Fergus Nolan (Letters, August 2nd) portrays the Obama administration as “no he didn’t” but fails to acknowledge that it was the Republican dominated US Congress that blocked most of the president’s liberal reforms.
After Donald Trump’s quite shocking criticism of Ghazala Khan, a mother who lost her son while serving his country, it is hoped that most voters in both major parties would now agree with Barack Obama’s comment that Trump is “unfit” and “woefully unprepared” for executive office.
As for Mr Nolan favouring a Trump presidency that might “shake up the status quo” one has only to look at recent developments in Turkey to question whether that is always a good thing. – Yours, etc,
