Sir, - So Wim Duisenberg thinks that Ireland should introduce less inflationary economic policies, does he (The Irish Times, February 3nd)? Before coming to this conclusion, perhaps he should have given some thought to the cause of Irish inflation. By common consent, the principal reason why Irish inflation has increased over the past year is the weakness of the euro. One of the main reasons why the value of the euro has tumbled is Wim Duisenberg's injudicious public utterances on future prospects for the currency. It would seem, therefore, that the European Commission might be on stronger ground if it reprimanded Wim Duisenberg instead of Charlie McCreevy. - Yours, etc.,
