Sir, – I refer to your article "'Socialist' Varadkar condemns profiteering by drug firms" (December 18th) and am cheered by what appears to be a convergence of opinion between Fine Gael's Minister for Health Leo Varadkar and Socialist Party TD Ruth Coppinger. I applaud them both as there is no doubt but that Ireland pays excessive prices for medical drugs. Now that the Minister has told us that "dealing with some of these companies would bring out whatever socialist instincts may be buried in me", may I suggest that he make a new year resolution to try to inject some of these socialist instincts into his Fine Gael leader and colleagues.
