Honouring Irish war dead

Madam, - I wish to endorse the comments expressed by Kevin Myers in his Irishman's Diary of June 15th

Madam, - I wish to endorse the comments expressed by Kevin Myers in his Irishman's Diary of June 15th. I attended the annual British Legion ceremony at Islandbridge to remember both my uncles who served in France during the first World War. One survived; the younger one died of his wounds in 1916, aged 19, and was buried at Couin near Arras.

Imagine my embarrassment, after the various wreaths had been laid by embassy officials of countries which included Poland and the Czech Republic, when I had to inform an overseas visitor that there was no official wreath from our Government.

The contribution by our Irish Naval Chaplin, who took part the moving religious ceremony, and a wreath from our UN veterans were the only expression offered to the many thousands of Irishmen who made the ultimate sacrifice. - Yours, etc.,

P. FAWL, Castletown, Co Kildare.
