Sir, – The only referendum the Government really needs to schedule is the one to introduce a Swiss-style direct democracy in which all subsequent referenda are initiated by a petitioning public. This would represent a far more substantial, and democratic, check and balance than the current Seanad, which is not directly elected. – Yours, etc,
