Focusing on climate change

Sir, – Congratulations on your continual coverage highlighting the issue of climate change. It is so important to keep this matter in the public domain to maintain pressure on the Government to deal with the problem. I was deeply involved in the smog campaign in Dublin in the late 1980s. We put such pressure on the government then that it resulted in an order being brought in to make Dublin smoke-free within one year instead of the projected 20 years. As you so aptly stated in Saturday’s leading article, our Government is making efforts to tackle the consequences of global warming rather than confronting the causes. Building flood defences and cleaning up after the recent deluge in Donegal are such examples. Therefore it is vital to keep the global warming issue at the forefront of our minds so that the Government will act speedily to meet its obligations under the Paris climate accord by drastically reducing our carbon emissions. – Yours, etc,
