FELLING TREES IN O'CONNELL ST

CATHERINE CAVENDISH,

CATHERINE CAVENDISH,

Madam, - Congratulations to your photographer Cyril Byrne for the splendid photograph of three TDs in chains, manacled to a plane tree in O'Connell Street on Thursday. What a shame such photography was not available for Mrs Pankhurst and the suffragette cause.

May one ask: if the felling of mature trees requires planning permission, and if the O'Connell Street Plan was available to public representatives, did it pass the area committee stage and did it pass the full council stage? If it did, who were the councillors that agreed to the plan and the felling of the trees? - Yours, etc.,

CATHERINE CAVENDISH,

Madam, - I would have thought that another reason for not felling the trees on O'Connell Street - apart, that is, from their aesthetic appeal and witness to historical events - is that our very own Taoiseach has actually climbed them. Sure wasn't he up every tree in north Dublin checking up on Ray Burke a few years back?

This, I submit, is reason alone to preserve these sylvan beauties. Look on them awhile and marvel at our leader's physical agility. - Yours, etc.,
