A chara, - Newton Emerson (Newton's Optic, July 13th), has given us yet another fine example of the infantile irreverence of our MTV/Big Brother generation.

As the Irish High Court deals with an important matter of moral concern, Mr Emerson has nothing more to offer us than a contemptuous sneer at embryonic human life.

A society that tolerates such callous disrespect for core values is a society in trouble. Some things are sacred, and there are times when we really must be serious.

So, let us sweep aside all this cheap comedy and have a little class; and if laugh we must, let us reserve our ridicule for unthinking clowns who will joke about anything. - Is mise,
