Madam, – It was heartening to read deputy IFA president Eddie Downey’s call (Home News, May 16th) for the IFA to take a leadership role in dealing with dumping of rubbish in our beautiful countryside. If the IFA membership gets behind this, it can only be a good thing.

However, there seems to be a deeply entrenched indifference in the culture and attitude of many local authorities and an apparent reluctance to tackle the issue on an ongoing basis.

For example, a mattress was recently dumped on the hard shoulder of the N11 and 10 days later was still there (I had seen an NRA inspection vehicle and not unreasonably assumed the mattress would be cleared). Instead, the mattress was joined by a roll of plastic sheeting! – Yours, etc,
