Covid confusion

Sir, – I share the confusion of your letter writers regarding the “guidance” we are receiving about the spread of Covid.

How is it that a schoolteacher can inform parents when there is an outbreak of head lice in their classroom (hardly life-threatening for grandparents) and cannot inform the same parents if there is an outbreak of Covid?

How is it that I can spend a full day in my office alongside my colleagues without presenting a Covid certificate and yet must show a certificate to spend even 10 minutes with a friend in a pub or restaurant?

How is it that the HSE won’t update my Covid certificate to show that I recently received a booster jab? My certificate shows that my second vaccination was eight months ago and so is no longer clear evidence that I am protected from the disease nor a threat to others.

Finally, why is it that the authorities won’t be more specific on the areas, functions, groups, activities and lifestyles that are spreading the virus instead of merely repeating the mantras of handwashing, social distancing and mask wearing that have proven to be only partial inhibitors to its spread?

We need more pragmatism and less political correctness if we are to stifle Covid.
