Madam, - Senator David Norris, according to Kathy Sheridan, stated in relation to the Zappone/Gilligan High Court action: "These are persons of substance and merit and they are being discriminated against". So what? Would Senator Norris care to correct himself or does he believe it is OK to discriminate against people of little merit and no substance?

This action has nothing to do with substance, merit or discrimination. It is ultimately a matter of who makes the laws. Is it the democratically elected politicians, or unelected judges?

If citizens want to change the Constitution or the law they should do it through the political process and stop hiding their political beliefs under the gowns of an increasingly meddlesome judiciary.

I contend that the vast majority of citizens believe marriage is between a man and a woman and if the High Court and ultimately the Supreme Court decides to contort the Constitution in favour of Drs Zappone and Gilligan our democracy will be the loser.

You may be surprised to know that I believe that gay people should be allowed to marry and have foreign marriages recognised. But this should happen through the votes of the electorate and not the legal contortions of unrepresentative and unelected judges.

Dr Zappone, Dr Gilligan and their supporters should campaign politically and not try to weasel a favourable if unrepresentative result in the courts. - Yours, etc,
