Madam, - I am writing to object to the callous and insensitive comments made by Mr Ryan Tubridy on The Panel, RTÉ2, (Oct 25th), in relation to women breast-feeding.

Mr Tubridy compared a woman who breast fed in public to someone "taking a piss" in public. His remarks are hurtful and offensive to women who choose to breast-feed. Breast- feeding is a completely natural means of feeding a baby.

To feed a child from the breast is not a sexual act nor is it a dirty act to be concealed from others.

A woman who breast-feeds is not exposing anyone to some form of perverted activity nor in turn should anyone be upset by seeing a child being fed by its mother. Perhaps Mr Tubridy would prefer if women breast-fed in toilets to protect him and others?

Come on, Mr Tubridy, this is the 21st century. Your concern about breast-feeding is nothing to do with you being politically correct or not.

Quite simply you have shown yourself for what you are - under that smooth and slick exterior beats the heart of a narrow, ignorant buffoon with the prejudices and inhibitions of an Ireland I thought to be dead and gone. - Yours, etc.,

PATRICIA KAVANAGH, Arklow, Co Wicklow.
