Madam, - I don't like disagreeing with anyone who takes Kevin Myers to task, but I must point out to Eugene J. Doyle (December 23rd) that even though Winston Churchill may in fact deserve that "Greatest Briton" award, this has nothing to do with the outcome of the second World War. In truth the British, with a few notable exceptions, fought rather poorly in the that war.

Starting from Dunkirk and ending perhaps "a bridge too far", they were almost always on the knife edge of defeat.

If Mr Doyle, and others, are pleased that they did not have to endure Nazi dictatorship, they need to remember another key phrase from that time: God Bless the United States of America. - Yours, etc.,
