Sir, – The charity sector has a huge public relations mountain to climb before regaining the public’s trust, and many deserving people will suffer as a result.
Might I suggest as a start that certain charities desist from sending naive young folk door to door to collect contributions?
These gormless teenagers are often almost totally clueless about the charities they are collecting for, and in the current climate this is even more damaging than usual. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I find it incomprehensible that in Ireland in the 21st century we are still relying on charities to provide some of our basic healthcare needs.
That the HSE uses charities over which it has little control to deliver healthcare is a serious error of basic business strategy and a dilution of its service and its responsibility to the public.
Let us have a comprehensive healthcare system delivered by the State, and let charities deliver their services to those countries that do not have modern healthcare. – Yours, etc,
