By George

Sir, – It is by no means certain that Prince Charles will take the title King Charles III when he eventually succeeds his mother Queen Elizabeth II (Finn McRedmond,Opinion. & Analysis, April 21st). Charles's grandfather George VI was known as Bertie, yet he did not choose to be King Albert; similarly the abdicated Edward VIII was known as David but he did not become King David, so plenty of precedent there. A more compelling reason for not choosing the name Charles is that there has already been a King Charles III, the Stuart pretender, Charles Edward Stuart 1720-1788, exiled in France and Italy and toasted by his supporters as "the King across the water". Prince Charles is unlikely to open up this potential can of worms and he may well opt for the title King George VII. – Yours, etc,
