Madam, - The conduct of sections of the crowd at the recent Dublin GAA match in Clones illustrates the crisis of values facing our society. Whatever one might think about the performance of the current Government, it is inappropriate to boo the person holding the office of Taoiseach at a sporting fixture.

Furthermore, given the current Taoiseach's genuine commitment to sport and the Dublin team in particular, it is in my view a disgrace that small numbers of the crowd acted in a manner that brings no credit to Dublin's excellent record on and off the pitch.

People are entitled to their views but they should have the courtesy to choose appropriate occasions and ways of expressing such views. Using the anonymity of the crowd at a sporting fixture is totally inappropriate. Is it not time that we reasserted the basic value of decent and courteous behaviour in our society?

Yours , etc.,
