DAVID MAHER,
Sir, - Some weeks ago the Dublin Cycling Campaign (DCC) organised a protest at Heuston station attended by 150 cyclists, including five TDs from four different political parties. The message was clear: Iarnród Éireann must commit itself to promoting sustainable transport by actively encouraging customers to cycle, rather that driving, to its stations.
The next two years will see the doubling of the number of platforms and the construction of the Luas line passing by the station. Also, the impending opening of the port tunnel will remove dangerous heavy goods vehicles from the quays. Despite this, and the fact that currently at peak times 300 bicycles park daily at Heuston station, IE is planning to provide only 250 uncovered racks in a far less central location than the present one. The DCC wants it to provide a minimum of 500 sheltered spaces, centrally located.
What is needed is a clear policy statement by Iarnród Éireann management supporting integrated sustainable transport and the provision of adequate facilities at all stations. There is an excellent opportunity for the new Transport Minister, Seamus Brennan, to prove his credentials in ensuring a balanced transport policy is being pursued. - Yours, etc.,
DAVID MAHER, Dublin Cycling Campaign, Millmount Grove, Dublin 14.
