A chara, - I read the awful report about the former Dublin radio DJ who savagely assaulted his wife while under the influence of alcohol (The Irish Times, March 29th).

It is cases like this that make me realise why those who want cannabis legalised get frustrated when their arguments are disregarded and scoffed at.

Alcohol is a drug which, when abused, can have horrific results, both for abusers and their victims. So why should one type of drug be socially acceptable, and another, allegedly similar, "soft" drug not?

We must stop pussy-footing around this issue, and realise that the favourite national pastime is the result of nothing but legalised drug-pushing by the Government (price controls, consumer-friendly licensing laws), the vintners and every brewery in the country. - Yours, etc.,
