Age of presidential candidates

Sir, – If the (other) constitutional referendum is passed on May 22nd and a whole new generation is encouraged to “run” for the presidency, the resulting exercise may reduce the levels of obesity among the young.

On a serious note, I intend to vote Yes because a young candidate will encourage earlier participation by Ireland’s youth in its democratic processes. A 21-year-old candidate may have little chance of electoral success, but will certainly be noticed by his or her peers.

Of course not everyone will be delighted at the notion of tens of thousands of extra youngsters turning up at the ballot box on that day. – Yours, etc,
