Taoiseach’s nuclear-power talk is all hot air

Such suggestions were unthinkable not so long ago

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, - Micheál Martin wonders about introducing nuclear power (“Ireland should ‘examine seriously’ nuclear power option, says Taoiseach”, May 4th). Presumably, the Irish Government has given up its opposition to the Sellafield plant which it was vociferous about half a lifetime ago?

I think the radioactivity will have diminished considerably by the time there is a shovel in the ground as I have zero confidence in their ability to make progress in this regard.

What about harvesting the same wind to generate electricity offshore and leave the hot air to the likes of Trump and his never-ending tilting at windmills? – Yours, etc,

Time to brush up on our French?

Sir, - I’ve noticed that Ireland has taken a leaf out of France’s book recently. Between a multimillion euro military partnership with the country, strong protests against the Government and a motion for nuclear-power development, the similarities are clear. Next, we’ll be their new Provence. - Yours, etc,

JAMES CLEAR,

Dún Laoghaire,

Co Dublin.
