Sir, – At this time of the year, I like to check the origins of vegetables in a number of large supermarkets. Onions from Spain, garlic from China, carrots from France, tomatoes from Spain, cucumbers and spinach from the Netherlands, and sugar-snap peas from Peru.

Why? All of these are growing very well in my garden in Cork. – Yours, etc,

TIM BRACKEN,

Cork.
