Sir, – More school and after-school care closures will take place across Ireland on June 7th, a Friday, when we vote in the local and European elections. This school day will not be made up and childcare will be paid for even though children won’t be able to attend. This is a cause of stress for many working parents who deserve better than this. There are 27 countries voting next week, only Ireland and the Netherlands are voting during the week, and the other 25 countries will vote over the weekend.
The Government needs to look at what these countries are doing and put a plan in place for the upcoming general election and avoid future school and childcare closures. If 25 countries in the EU can vote at the weekends, so can we. – Yours, etc,
SIOBHÁN McDERMOTT,
Killester,
