Sir, – In “Sunak tries comedy as poll numbers suggest Tories might end up as the butt of the joke” (World, Analysis, September 29th), Mark Paul reports that the British prime minister Rishi Sunak addressed members of his party at “The old National Liberal Club Building” in Whitehall, which, we are informed, is now a hotel.
As a proud member of the National Liberal Club, 1 Whitehall Place, London SW1, I can tell you that our club still exists in the “hub of Whitehall”.
As well as having one of the most ornate and capacious clubhouses in London, we also have the best private Thames-side terrace in London, a world-class restaurant and much else besides.
I believe that the place referred to in the article is the Royal Horseguards Hotel. This establishment is made up of a portion of our club that we sold off many years ago.

If Mark Paul would like to sample the hospitality of our vibrant and inclusive club, I would be pleased to treat him to lunch or dinner and a tour of it when I’m next in London. – Yours, etc,
