Sir, – I beg to differ from Fergus Gillespie’s analysis of the pronunciation of Gaeilge (Letters, May 1st).
As a living language Gaeilge has been evolving and changing over centuries.
The overemphasis on the technical aspects of the language, rather than a simple encouragement of its everyday use, has bedevilled the revival of our national language since 1922. We do not need the equivalent of the Académie Française, the state authority on usages, vocabulary and grammar of the French language. – Yours, etc,
