Gary Lineker and the BBC

Sport and politics

Sir, – Gary Lineker’s position as a BBC employee is untenable. Being impartial goes with the territory of working for it. His opinions on football are sought, not his opinions on politics. He should have been removed from his position back in November when he criticised Qatar while presenting the World Cup opening ceremony. I say this as someone who respects his views on Qatar and shares his views on the UK migrant crisis. It’s about having regard for your employer’s position and the terms of your contract. He can tweet all he likes about current affairs when he’s no longer working for the BBC. He has become too big for the boots he fitted so admirably during his stellar playing career. – Yours, etc,
