Sir, – The much-anticipated extension of Dublin’s Dart system to Maynooth and M3 Parkway, just announced, is much welcomed (“Dart+ West project application to be submitted to An Bord Pleanála”, News, July 25th).
But what about extending the extension? A glance at an Ordnance Survey map of Cavan, Monaghan, or Donegal will show a myriad of something called “disused railway line” snaking through all three counties, illustrating clearly the absence of a train service to the border region. Here in Belturbet, the Belturbet Heritage Railway people have managed to install both broad-gauge and narrow-gauge sections of working tracks to and from the previously defunct railway station, now a much-visited museum, as well as a community hub. Perhaps we ought to run a flag or a “coat of arms” which the Irish railways used up a very tall flagpole in the hope of being seen from Dublin? – Yours, etc,
