Lack of bus services in provincial towns

Cuts mean town are being cut off

Sir, – At a time when Dublin Bus is planning a 24 hour bus service, provincial towns are being cut off.

It was hugely disappointing when Bus Éireann cut its Loughrea bus service.

Now Citylink has also cut back on the service it offers.

It has quietly dropped services from its Galway-Loughrea timetable, with no public announcement.

There is now no public transport from Galway to Loughrea after 6pm. I believe that private operators are hugely subsidised in order to provide an appropriate transport service to people living outside Dublin. They are not fulfilling their duty in this regard.

This is a ridiculous situation, especially when fuel prices are at an all-time high and the Government is advising people to use public transport for environmental reasons.

Where are the Green Party voices to pressurise Bus Éireann or the private operators into doing their duty? – Yours, etc,

ORLA KILRAINE,

Loughrea,

Co Galway.
