US President George W Bush has chosen Robert Zoellick, a former US Trade Representative, as the new president for the World Bank, a senior administration official said today.

Mr Bush will announce his selection tomorrow and expects the bank's board to accept it, the official said.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson received "positive reactions" from other countries to the choice. Zoellick will replace Paul Wolfowitz, who resigned after a storm of criticism over a salary increase for his companion.
