A woman charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a mother of two outside a supermarket in Laytown on Friday night is due to appear before Dundalk District Court on Wednesday.

Kelly Noble (20), Seaview, Laytown, Co Meath, was remanded in custody when she appeared before a special court sitting in Ardee, Co Louth, on Saturday, accused of murdering Emma McLoughlin (19) at Ninch, Laytown.

The court heard she made no reply after the charge was put to her on Saturday afternoon.

Supt Gerry Smyth told Judge Flann Brennan that, as the court had no jurisdiction to grant bail in relation to the alleged offence, he was seeking a remand in custody.

Defence solicitor James MacGuill said that given the fact that the High Court was on vacation, he was seeking an adjournment to the next sitting of Dundalk District Court.

At that time, he hoped to be in a position to give a clear indication of how progress would be made in the case.

The court heard that a bench warrant had been issued for Ms Noble at Drogheda District Court two weeks earlier when she had failed to appear in relation to alleged road traffic offences.

When Judge Brennan asked why she had not turned up for that court case, he was told it was due to a misunderstanding.

She was remanded in custody on the murder charge, while in relation to the motoring charges, bail was set at €500.

Judge Brennan granted Ms Noble legal aid and remanded her in custody to Mountjoy Prison. He agreed at the request of her solicitor to remand her in custody with consent to €500 bail in relation to the summary offences.

Mr MacGuill told the court that the case would be fully contested.
