Majestic Concorde warmed up for a possible tilt at the Galway Hurdle on Thursday with a smooth victory in the GPT Galway Handicap on the opening day of the festival.

Settled just off the pace, Robbie McNamara kicked for home fully two furlongs out on Dermot Weld's five-year-old.

Weld's Broad Meaning had earlier won the GPT Access Equipment (C&G) EBF Maiden, meaning the undisputed king of Galway has now won the seven-furlong maiden an incredible 18 times.

Power Of Future and Tony Martin's Northumberland Plate winner Arc Bleu emerged from the pack to chase Majestic Concorde home but the 7-1 chance had flown.

The winner was cut to 7-1 from 10s for the Galway Hurdle by William Hill following his four-length rout.

Weld said: "The plan is to run on Thursday in the Galway Hurdle depending on how he pulls out of the race.

"There is a €50,000 bonus to win both and Denis O'Regan has been booked to ride him.

"I've won this race four times as a jockey and now five times as a trainer. Robbie gave him a peach of a ride and he is a very stylish amateur and a good guy to boot.

"He's a tall guy and I think that is the lightest he's ever been, so for all the wasting he did at least he got his rewards.

"Ideally he'd prefer further, but he's very good."

Broad Meaning, the son of Oasis Dream, was sent of the 5-6 favourite and Pat Smullen always made sure he was in the box seat.

Johnny Murtagh threw down a huge challenge on Drumbeat, the 7-4 second-favourite, but was half a length down at the line.

William Hill gave the winner a 33-1 quote for next season's 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Jim Gorman's Hassanali landed the first blow for the bookmakers at the festival when springing a 20-1 surprise in the GPT Sligo Novice Hurdle.

Ridden by David Casey, he looked booked for second in the home straight as Mervyn Torrens' Dancera, who had jumped for fun throughout, appeared to have the race in the bag.

But as Dancera began to tire under 7lb claimer Andrew Thornton he made a complete hash of the final flight, handing the initiative to Hassanali who went on to win by two lengths. Arviz finished well to take third, while Negus (10-3) failed to justify his favouritism.

"I'm not surprised he won, despite his price. The lads in yard thought he'd win," said Gorman. "He's disappointed on soft ground but back on good ground he liked it today.

"David gave him a peach of a ride and I couldn't have written the script any better."

Punters drew level in the next race, however, as the favoured combination of Tony Martin and Ruby Walsh combined with Stage Manager.

Travelling strongly throughout in the GPT Dublin Handicap Hurdle, Walsh asked his mount to quicken between the final two flights and the response was immediate from the 3-1 favourite.

Weld's Little Eye stayed on for second after leading for a long way but was four and a half lengths away, with Dani's Girl third.
