LONDON - A debate between three prospective Chancellors will form the centrepiece of Channel 4's election coverage, it was announced yesterday. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Kenneth Clarke, is to join Labour's Mr Gordon Brown and Mr Malcolm Bruce of the Liberal Democrats in Power and the People, a television discussion on Sunday April 27th.
And the leaders of Britain's main political parties have agreed to take part in a televised debate - but not together. The Prime Minister, Mr Major, the Labour leader, Mr Blair, and the Liberal Democrat leader, Mr Ashdown, are to face questions from the audience of BBC1's Question Time in separate programmes. David Dimbleby will also interview the party leaders separately in Panorama specials broadcast on BBC1, and Peter Jay will present his own interview programme with the prospective chancellors on BBC2's The Money Programme on April 6th.
